Norfolk is a great place to spend a holiday. This county has beautiful villages with beautiful coastline to match. When you are in Norfolk, you must visit Holkham Beach.

The beauty of Holkham Beach in Norfolk can astound you. It has endless miles of shimmering golden sand, beautiful blue sea, and massive sky.

Visitors, especially children, can play safely in this pool. This beach is actually part of the Holkham Nature Reserve so that it is no wonder that visitors can spot rare species of animals and plants on this beach and its surroundings.

The back of this beach is lined with pinewoods. If you are tired of exploring the beach or the weather is too hot, you can have a picnic under the shade of the pine trees in this forest.

However, the beach management forbids BBQ on this beach.

This preserved and magical beach attracted a few filmmakers to use the beach as one of their filming venues.

It was seen in film with the title of Shakespeare in Love (1999) starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Annihilation (2018) starring Natalie Portman.

The beach of Holkham is a non-commercial beach. You don’t need to pay an entrance fee to have a holiday on this beach. You can also take Holkham Beach photos freely.

However, if you are going to take commercial photos or videos, you need to get permission from Holkham Estate.

How to Get There

The location of this stunning beach is in North Norfolk. Its coastline is in between Burnhams and Wells.

This beach is very close to the Holkham Hall. If you are in London, you can choose to get there by car or by train.

The distance of Holkham beach from London is about 204 km or about 2 hours and 30 minutes’ drive via M11.

The village of Holkham is located on A149 coast road that is only 2 miles from Wells-next-the-Sea.

To reach the beach of Holkham, you need to turn your car at Lady Anne’s Drive.

There is no train station in Holkham, the nearest one is in Sheringham. From Kings Cross, London, take a train to Kings Lynn.

After that, you can ride a taxi or Coast liner bus from this station to Holkham. The distance between Kings Lynn and Holkham is 42 km.

Things to Do

When you are holidaying in Holkham, you can do various activities.

1. Beach Walking

Beach walking is one of the favorite things to do in this area. There are a couple of beach walk routes.

One of them is just a mile long. However, you can make your own track by walking along the beach, passing the salt water lagoon, and pine woods.

2. Holkham Beach Riding Holiday

Holkham is a friendly beach for horses. During the low tide, the beach is extremely large so that you can train your horses freely.

In addition, there is a special area for horseboxes at the car park. However, you need to come early since the horseboxes area is often full in the summer.

The car park opens at 6 a.m. every day. Meanwhile, the closing hour depends on the month. From April to September, it closes at 9 p.m. and from October to March, it closes at 6 p.m. Overnight parking at the car park is not allowed.

The Lookout is a visitor centre that offers you with a cafe, toilets, an educational area, and seating.


3. Wheelchair Access

Some facilities on this beach are accessible for those on wheelchairs, such as disabled parking area that is located nearest to the beach and a disabled viewing hide.



Where to stay in Holkham? If you want to stay in this beautiful village for a night or two, you can choose to stay in one of the inns, glam ping sites, or wild camping sites.

You can find those sites a few miles from the Holkham Hall. However, some of them only open in the summer.

Holkham Beach is a perfect holiday spot for families and horse lovers. To make your holiday more perfect, you must add Holkham Hall and Wells-next-the-Sea on your itinerary.
