Holiday at San Fruttuoso Beach

Known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, San Fruttuoso Beach must be added to your destination list when visiting this country.  

This beach is such a gem as it’s found in a pristine bay with green surroundings and medieval buildings. Let’s dig deeper into what we can explore when visiting this amazing beach.

Sun Fruttuoso is secluded between rocky hills, so it’s quite difficult to reach the beach from the artificial roads of the Liguria Region. Instead, it can be accessed by sea from Camogli.

Another alternative is visiting this beach from coastal cities in Liguria such as Genoa.

Those who like tracking can try to visit Sun Fruttuoso by hiking along the trail in the Regional Park of Portofino. Whatever access you choose, a journey to get into the beach is jaw-dropping.

Reaching the place by walking will get you to pass the astonishing trail that lies over the sea and enjoy the natural scents of flowering shrubs in your surroundings.

Meanwhile, riding a boat will give you a wonderful view of the Ligurian coast along with fascinating buildings from the past nearby.

Sun Fruttuso is well-known for its historic beach. It’s because, in the past, this beach was a location of a Benedictine monastery around the year 1000. Then, it changed into a pirates’ shelter.

As the population grew, it became a fishing village. Recently, it’s a getaway from busy life or daily crowded activities. It’s a tranquil holiday destination where everyone can enjoy the peace and re-energize their body and mind.

When visiting Sun Fruttuoso Beach, it’s not enough when you’re just enjoying the beach itself. There are several attractions nearby that are worth exploring.  

1. A local village

There is a local village perched on the highland of the main beach. This village can be reached by crossing the beach and pass under the arches of an ancient monastery.

Then, you need to go up to the square where a church sits and can be visited freely by the tourists.

While exploring the village, you will realize that the coast disappear is unseen. This giving a feel that you are in a secluded small village.

2. The famous artifact

After satisfied walking through the local village, you will pass a bridge and arrive in a scenic wooden artifact.

This artifact is captivating as it’s accompanied by a set of mystifying machinery. The one we can tell as battilisca, the one used by the locals for spinning cables.

The famous one can be found at Camogli Tonnarella, a simple version of local fishing system. Previously, it was used herringbone pattern while today it comes in coconut filet.

3. The Abbey

There is an attractive Abbey in Sun Fruttuoso which is rich in history related to a monastery that existed in the past.

Recently, this complex has been reinstated and under maintenance of Fondo Ambiantale Italiano (FAI).

Near the Abbey, you can discover a Doria Tower that gives a strong sense of history to visitors.

The Abbey complex lately holds several cultural events and shows. In summer, people can enjoy temporary exhibitions when visiting here. There are also classical music concerts conducted inside the cloister of Abbey.

Right before the Abbey, perched in the middle of the rocks, there is a small restaurant and café bar where you can taste tantalizing Ligurian seafood cuisine and local culinary.

If you want to enjoy more me-time, there is a private beach near the restaurant.

4. Casa dell’ Arco and the mill’s house

On the way to get back to the beach, we will admire a traditional house called Casa dell’ Arco. The house which is located at the furthest point to the east of the village emerges in the middle of holm oak boughs.

To move away, there is a mill’s house that takes benefit of water from the nearby river to work. Nowadays, in this location, there is a restaurant where visitors can enjoy some meals or enjoy a brief stay at Locanda del Parco.  

5. Christ of the Abyss dive

Another reason why people like to visit San Fruttuoso Beach Italy is that they want to enjoy the legendary Christ of the Abyss dive.

Diving in this area is quite easy as it’s located in fairly low waters. Down the waters, you can encounter, likes its name, a Christ of the Abyss statue.

Not just enjoying the iconic statue underwater, people will feel fresh swimming in the pristine and clear blue waters. Faced the Abbey, there is a small gravelly beach. People often rent sun umbrellas or deck chairs to enjoy sun tanning.  

Where to Stay

Other than a San Fruttuoso hotel, if you look for an affordable option, there is a small house in Genoese style that was lately restored by FAI.

This house is encircled by olive trees and offers a beautiful coastal view. The can accommodate five people and perfect for those who want to experience a romantic holiday with the beloved one.

This rental house consists of a living room, a well-equipped, kitchen, two bedrooms with an idyllic view, a bathroom, and a terrace.

It also provides basic foods and beverages along with daily necessities such as linens and towels.  

Public services such as pharmacy and hospital only can be found in the close towns. However, you still able to enjoy pleasurable time with friends at the San Fruttuoso club in this area.

Visiting towns from the beach or vice versa is available with ferry services. However, the service depends on the weather.

Cancellation may happen due to bad weather, so it’s better to check weather forecast before doing the reservation.

As San Fruttuoso Beach is one of the most-wanted holiday destinations in Italy, make sure to know what worthy attractions to visit so that you don’t waste time there.

San Fruttuoso is a bit busy in the summer. It’s fine for most people but if you want to enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere, choose another time.
