About the Beach
The Grande Plage the largest beach in Biarritz, France. Situated exactly in front of the town, the beach stretches from north to south for about 750 meters. It is a brown sandy beach with great waves, making it ideal for water sports like surfing.
Before being called La Grande Plage, this beach was called the Crazy Beach and Empress Beach. It was called the Crazy Beach because of the recklessness of the bathers who plunge into the beach’s giant waves and the Empress Beach to honor Empress Eugenie.

Things You Can Do at the Beach
The beach is large, so there is no need to worry about not getting a place for sunbathing. Be warned, however, as there are times when the beach will be crowded. Better check the schedule before you go soak up the sun rays.
If you are a surfer, you will love La Grande Plage. This beach has huge waves you can surf. Not a surfer but want to learn surfing? No problem. There are plenty of surfing schools at the beach. Just take private surf lessons and see if you can ride the waves.
You can swim at the designated swimming zones at the beach. Be aware that the swimming zones are moved depending on the tides. Also keep in mind that in peak seasons the lifeguards don’t start working until 10.00 a.m.
4. Walking along the beach
The beach stretches for about 750 meters. Do you know what that means? That’s right. A long stroll along the seashore.
During your trip to the beach, you will eat sooner or later. Fortunately, there are lots of restaurants near the beach. Some restaurants are even within walking distance which you can reach within minutes.
Biarritz is a small town. Despite its size, it has many tourist attractions. The Grande Plage is just one of many. There are many other sites worth sightseeing, from a museum, lighthouse, historical and cultural sites, restaurants, to casino.
1. Chapelle Imperiale
Perhaps you want to see a historical and cultural aspect of Biarritz? In that case, you want to put Chapelle Imperiale on your must-visit list. It was built at the request of Empress Eugenie. The chapel is not big, but it is beautiful and well-maintained.
2. Phare de Biarritz
Phare de Biarritz is definitely a tourist attraction in Grand Plage that you wouldn’t want to miss. Located in the northern part of the beach, the lighthouse allows you to enjoy the scenic panorama of downtown Biarritz. It also has grassy areas, in case you want to have a picnic near the beach.
3. Casino Barriere
Want to test your luck? There’s a casino in southern La Grande Plage named Casino Barrier. The seafront casino has slots and pokers, tables, live entertainment, and a bar.
4. Musee Asiatica
A museum that has collections from Nepal, Tibet, Chinese, and India. The museum has over 1,000 objects, with more than 100 masterpieces.
1. Pavillon du Phare – Bar iode
If walking along the beach is your thing, consider ending your walk at the Pavillon du Phare restaurant. This restaurant not only offers delicious foods and beverages but also outdoor seating, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Grande Plage. A perfect place to end your walk.
The restaurant is about 1 kilometer from the beach, so it is very close. You can reach the restaurant from the beach in 10 minutes on foot.
2. Fumoir Marin
What if you want a romantic dinner at night with your spouse? There’s a place for that too near the Grande Plage. Look no further than Fumoir Marin. Fumoir Marin serves not only seafood cuisines but also French, European, and healthy ones.
So if you want to enjoy a delicious dinner near the beach, this would be it. No need to worry about the distance. The restaurant is about 700 meters from the beach. You can reach it within 9 minutes on foot.
3. Le Comptoir Iode
Looking for a restaurant that serves French lunch and dinner meals? If that is the case, then consider going to Le Comptoir Iode.
Unlike the others on the list, this restaurant La Grande Plage is a bit far from the beach, about 3.5 kilometers or an 8-minute drive. Considering the delicious French cuisines and gluten-free options, this one is worth the traveling.
4. Restaurant Chez Marco
Restaurant Chez Marco is a restaurant that has it all. It offers dining bars, French, and Spanish cuisines. It is a family-style restaurant that has outdoor seating. If you like to eat at a restaurant with plenty of options, consider eating at Restaurant Chez Marco.
This restaurant is also a bit far from the beach, about 6.8 to 7.5 kilometers from the beach depending on where you stay. You can reach it within 13 minutes of driving.
5. Iqori Restaurant
Last but definitely not least, Iqori. Iqori serves French and Gastropub cuisines. Not only that, but the restaurant serves vegetarian-friendly cuisines as well. So if you’re a vegetarian, this is a good place to eat.
This restaurant is located 850 meters from the beach. You can reach it within 12 minutes from the beach on foot.
