Mnemba Island

Zanzibar has the most incredible diving spot; it is located in the Mnemba Island. The diving spot here has a coral reef that is still quite intact. The fish of Indian Ocean can be found here. Blocks of hard coral and soft coral are embedded in the beach’s white sand.

This island is actually a small sized private island. It is located around three miles from the Indian Ocean’s north-east coast. Only the guests of Mnemba Island Lodge are allowed to visit the island. If you accidentally step on the island, you will be charged.

The Wonderful Lodge at Zanzibar Mnemba Island

The lodge on this island is owned by the famous Bill Gates. It is a luxurious resort that has 10 private bungalows. Since it is owned by a famous person, you may be wondering how much money you should spend to rent a room there. Don’t worry, you’ll find the details you need down here.

If you are not interested in visiting the island, you can still enjoy snorkeling around the island. Just make sure you stay in the water and don’t get close to the island. Just to make sure that you won’t get charged for accidentally touching the island with your feet.

Here are some snorkeling tips for you who want to know how adorable what’s under Mnemba Island is.

1. Make sure you clean your mask

The snorkeling mask must be cleaned before you start snorkeling. Use toothbrush and toothpaste to clean the mask. Then scrub your mask in the hot water. Make sure it is completely rinsed. If the lens of your mask is not made of glass, use the dish soap and washcloth to clean the plastic mask.

2. Avoid touching the coral

No, no charge for touching the coral. But coral is a precious living organism. You should not stand on the coral. Always look down when you are snorkeling in order to make sure that your legs don’t kick anything under the water. Do not stand on rocks. Those rocks may be a vulnerable organism.

3. Put on the biodegradable sunscreen

That kind of sunscreen is much better for our ecosystem. Many sunscreens contain octinoxate and oxybenzone, two most dangerous ingredients for coral reefs. The chemicals in sunscreen can bleach the coral.

Some other harmful ingredients for coral reefs are including PABA, avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, and preservatives like butylparaben. Try to avoid sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals and oils.

4. Stay away from the sea creatures

Marine life or sea creatures can be hazardous. Several species can be poisonous while the others may react defensively and cause injury to them or to you. Also, avoid feeding the fishes. They can find their own food. Feeding fishes will throw off the natural balance.

5. Leave everything under the water

Whatever you see under the water must stay under the water, including the sands, coral fragment, starfish, shells, and sea urchins. Even though something seems dead, it doesn’t mean you are allowed to bring it home. Leave everything in its place.

Those are everything you must keep in your mind when you’re planning to go snorkeling in Mnemba Island. If you want to stay on the island, keep reading to find the complete details about the famous resort you can find on the island.
